Application of titanium and titanium alloy in Marine equipment

Titanium material is the most ideal material in the Marine environment. Using titanium material can greatly improve the combat effectiveness, reduce the maintenance cost, prolong the service life and improve the concealment of naval vessels and equipment. The Russian, American and Chinese navies have widely used titanium materials in the pressurized shells, seawater piping systems, superstructures and other components of deep-sea submersives, underwater submarines, surface ships and ships.

Ti-6al-4v and TI-6Al-4VELI (corresponding to domestic brands TC4 and TC4ELI) are the main titanium materials used for manned spherical shells of deep submersives at home and abroad. Many deep submersible manned spherical shells use steel in the early stage, but titanium is used in the later stage, which can not only reduce the weight, increase the diving depth, but also improve the service life.

Pressure shell

In the application of submarine pressure shell, Russia is the first to use titanium material, and is the most advanced and mature country in the world in using titanium material to manufacture pressure shell. The only titanium material used in its all-titanium nuclear submarine manufacturing is IIT-3B titanium alloy (corresponding to the domestic brand TA17). In recent years, titanium materials are preferred in the construction of submarines in China, and the grades are mainly concentrated in TA17, TC4, TC4ELI, TC11, pure titanium and so on.

In addition, many countries are currently building large depth manned submersibles and large depth all-titanium weapons. The domestically built all-sea deep manned submersible "Striver" successfully challenged the world's deepest ocean, the Mariana Trench, with a depth of 10,099m on November 10, 2020, realizing the Deep-sea dream of the Chinese people.

Sea water piping system

Seawater pipeline system is complex, diameter specifications are many, the selected materials are required to have seawater corrosion resistance, high strength, good fatigue performance and other characteristics, titanium material can meet, the pipeline made of titanium alloy compared with traditional materials (carbon steel, stainless steel, copper alloy) has significant advantages.

The superstructure
At present, titanium materials have been applied to ship superstructure in China, such as Ti70(TA23) for mast, TA5 and TA7 rods for radar antenna, TA2 and TA5 plates for hangar skin and frame structure. The NAVY also used titanium extensively in the superstructure area, a critical part of the LPD17 amphibious dock transport, reducing its mass by about 50 percent and greatly improving the ship's stability.

Other Applications
In addition to the pressure shell, pipeline system and superstructure, titanium is widely used in other parts of offshore equipment at home and abroad.
